H
hand-me-down
- The hand-me-down may be pluralized when used as a noun, as in "I wore nothin' but hand-me-downs till I was fourteen years old."
It does not have to come from a relative to be a hand-me-down, as it may also be handed down from a neighbor, a friend, or be purchased at a Good Will Store or yard sale, although in the latter cases it's more often referred to as used.
It can also function as an adjective, as in "That's a hand-me-down shirt but them pants is brand spankin' new."Last edited on Sep 03 2009. Submitted by Anonymous on Sep 03 2009.
