origin
- One etymological theory is that the term was used by rear gunners in World War Two bombers. As the explanation goes, ammunition belts were nine yards long. When a target was attacked, the machine gunner would sometimes fire "the whole nine yards" of ammunition at the target.
This etymology doesn't appear to be correct. For more information, see the Wikipedia article for "the whole nine yards".Last edited on Aug 19 2012. Submitted by Michael Xavier on Jun 09 2012.
